General Health

General Health
  • Health encompasses all the spheres of life and so influences all our deeds and thoughts.

  • Health is influenced by External, Internal and Personal factors that comprise of food habits, heredity, lifestyle and cleanliness.

  • A healthy body has perfect syncronization between all internal functions.

  • The ultimate means to achieve happiness is well-being, and this is achieved in turn by staying healthy and fit.

  • Health is a more valuable asset than having good education, parents and inheritance of riches.

The most widely accepted definition of good health is that of the World Health Organization Constitution. It states that,"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." (World Health Organization, 1946)

What constitutes health?

Your health is mainly determined by three factors: External factors, Internal factors and Personal factors. Environmental conditions, Pattern of life, Society, Food habits, Lifestyle, Diet, Heredity, Cleanliness, and Fitness come under these factors which decide whether an individual will be healthy or otherwise.

One cannot control one's environment or his genetic structure, and thus part of your health is already decided. But you are in control of your personal factors. One can always change one's way of life which ensures him/her the optimum benefits for health.

For healthy living, all the functions going on in the body must be carried on perfectly well. The human body is an intricate tapestry and is amazingly adept at doing its job, like a well oiled machine, but if not maintained properly, there might be some anomalies in one's being.

Importance of good health

"If health is lost, everything is lost." Importance of health in life can hardly be over-emphasized. To have a healthy body and mind is an asset perhaps more important than having good education, good parents, and inheritance of riches. In the wake of all luxuries if health is lacking then happiness certainly becomes a far cry.

Your health is of paramount importance because:
1. Being in good health will ensure a much lengthier lifespan allowing you to better enjoy the fruits of your toil over the years.
2. Being in good health is essential to enjoying the spoils of life. Nobody can enjoy comforts, luxuries and riches if they are in discomfort due to neglected health.
3. Neglected health can often lead to more complicated problems, which may require long, painful, and uncertain recovery periods.
Many people in today's rat race, to be on top, are so busy with education, jobs, and lifestyle, that they forget about taking care of their own bodies and minds. As it is oft quoted, "you never really know what you got till it's gone".

Ancient Indian wisdom correlates healthy life to the ultimate purpose of life and if this is achieved, there is true fulfillment of the objective of life. Healthy living in itself paves the way for happy, peaceful and prosperous life. By staying healthy and fit, we are able to cherish the most fond memories of our life with family and friends which otherwise are so rare to be found and preserved due to the modern-day tiring and monotonous pace of life.
