Getting started
-
In starting a new exercise programme, be flexible and be prepared to experiment in order to discover what works best for you.
-
You will be amazed at the results that a few regular sessions will have on your energy.
-
A nutritious and healthy diet is an essential part of any fitness plan.
-
It is much easier to stick to an exercise programme once you know what your true motivation is and what you are hoping to achieve.
-
Always start your programme slowly.
When you are embarking on anything new it can be difficult to know where exactly to begin or how to organize yourself. Remember to take it easy when you start exercising, and don't do more than feels comfortable; you will soon be fit enough to increase the pace.
How to exercise?
For those of you who have never exercised before, or have only attended occasional classes and are not used to a regular exercise routine, or who have become unfit through not exercising for a while, it can be difficult to know exactly where to start. Frequently, expectations of yourself are set too high and you can become easily disheartened and give up too quickly. Always start your programme slowly, at least until you are familiar with the exercises, and remember that any of the exercises that have an instruction to use weights can be done just as easily without, at least to start with. As you exercise, pace yourself throughout and then finish as slowly as you began. If you feel faint or dizzy or out of breath at any time, stop immediately - you might be doing too much, too soon.![]()
What do I need?
You do not need to buy any special clothing or equipment, unless you want to. Always dress in comfortable clothing that allows you to move, and make sure you are sufficiently warm, particularly when stretching out after any vigorous exercise. Buy hand and leg weights if you wish, or make do with items that you have around the house.![]()
Planning your time
If you're a beginner, start with two workouts per week of around 20 minutes, until you feel ready to build up to 30 minutes. You will be amazed at the results that a few regular sessions will have on your energy levels and overall feeling of well-being.
Choose a time of day to exercise that suits you and be prepared to change it, if the need arises. If you don't know what time of day suits, then try exercising at different times. Many people like exercising in the morning, particularly if they are able to slot it in as part of their regular morning routine.![]()
